Description
What Is Criss Cross PU Foam Pig?
A Criss Cross PU Foam Pig is a high-performance pipeline cleaning and maintenance tool widely used in oil, gas, and water pipeline systems. It features a resilient polyurethane (PU) foam body that is fully coated with a criss-cross pattern of PU elastomer on the surface. This unique criss-cross coating design significantly enhances the pig’s scraping performance and extends its service life compared to standard uncoated foam pigs.
What Are the Key Parameters?

| Body Material | Premium Polyurethane (PU) Foam |
| Surface Coating | PU Elastomer, Criss-Cross Pattern |
| Nose Style | Bullet Nose / Double Dish |
| Startup Pressure | 0.02 MPa (low launch pressure) |
| Max Operating Pressure | 7.0 MPa (1015 PSI) |
| Temperature Range | -40 C to 80 C |
| Pipe Deformation Allowance | Up to 50% diameter variation |
| Optional Add-ons | Magnets, Brushes, Transmitter Cavity, Gauging Plate |
How Does It Work?
The Criss Cross PU Foam Pig is launched into the pipeline through a pig launcher and is propelled by the pressure of the flowing medium (liquid or gas). As the pig travels through the pipeline, its flexible PU foam body compresses and expands to adapt to pipe diameter changes, ovality, dents, and wall deformations of up to 50%. The criss-cross PU elastomer coating on the surface creates multiple scraping edges that continuously contact the pipe wall, effectively removing rust, scale, wax, construction debris, and liquid holdup from the internal pipe surface.
For pipelines with heavy fouling or hardened deposits, EMT can equip the pig with steel wire brushes or abrasive elements to provide aggressive mechanical cleaning. Optional neodymium magnet inserts capture and retain ferrous debris such as welding slag, rust scales, and metal particles that could damage downstream equipment or interfere with inline inspection (ILI) tools. A transmitter cavity (pinger cavity) can be installed to allow real-time pig tracking and localization during the run. Bypass holes or jetting ports are available to control pressure differential across the pig, preventing pressure lock when the pig encounters a restriction or reduced-diameter section.
Where Should You Use It?
The versatility of the Criss Cross PU Foam Pig makes it suitable for a wide range of pipeline scenarios across the oil, gas, petrochemical, and water industries:
- Pre-commissioning cleaning: Remove construction debris, welding slag, and contaminants before hydrotest and startup.
- Post-hydrotest dewatering: Remove water and dry the pipeline with air or nitrogen after hydrostatic testing.
- Routine maintenance pigging: Periodic cleaning to remove liquid accumulation, wax buildup, and scale.
- Product batching: Separate different product batches in multi-product pipelines and reduce product mixing.
- Pipeline gauging: Run before intelligent pigging (ILI) to verify minimum internal diameter and detect obstructions.
- Wax and paraffin removal: Remove heavy wax deposits in crude oil and waxy crude pipelines.
- Liquid removal in gas lines: Remove liquid accumulation (condensate, water) to restore flow efficiency.
- Pre-ILI conditioning: Clean and condition the pipeline before launching expensive intelligent inspection tools.
